A Coruña, known as the ‘city of glass’, is one of the jewels in the crown of Galicia. Capital of the Rías Altas, this millenary city has the perfect size and a gastronomic, architectural and cultural offer that makes it an ideal tourist destination that offers numerous activities. Therefore, we propose an itinerary designed to make the most of your stay and know what to see in A Coruña in one day.

A morning surrounded by history

The tour starts in the old town, a place that breathes history and tradition. Its cobbled streets and small squares are perfect for walking aimlessly and discovering its charm at your own pace.

The next step can be the Church of Santiago, the oldest temple in the city and dating back to the 12th century. From there, it is a short walk to the well-known Plaza de María Pita, the heart of A Coruña, presided over by the City Hall building. In this square is the statue of María Pita, the local heroine we told you about in a previous article. The terraces of the surrounding cafes are ideal for sitting and watching the atmosphere.

Not far away are the Galerías de la Marina, one of the identifying symbols of the provincial capital. This pedestrian street, located next to the port, houses modernist buildings with large glass galleries very characteristic of the city. In fact, these buildings are the reason why A Coruña is known as the ‘city of glass’.

The next stop is the Castillo de San Antón, an ancient fortress located on an islet that was built to repel invaders arriving from the sea.

After touring the old town, you can continue on to the Tower of Hercules, the oldest functioning Roman lighthouse, which was also declared a World Heritage Site. This iconic monument, in use for nearly 2,000 years, offers unparalleled views of the Galician coastline and the vast Atlantic Ocean. If you’re feeling energetic, climb the 234 steps to the top for a panoramic view of the provincial capital.

Nearby is the Tower of Hercules Sculpture Park, an outdoor sculpture complex that brings together the art and mythology of the region. One of the most emblematic pieces is the ‘Rosa de los Vientos’, a huge compass painted on the ground.

A walk along the seashore

The next stop on this itinerary is the promenade, one of the longest in Europe, with a 13-kilometer route around the bay. As you walk, you will notice how modern architecture merges with the sea, reflecting the seafaring spirit of A Coruña.

Now, head to the Monte Alto neighborhood, known for its atmosphere and great gastronomic offer. For lunch, choose a local restaurant where you can savor authentic Galician dishes, such as Pulpería O Fiuza or Asador La Cabaña.

Afternoon on the city’s beaches and gardens

The beaches of Riazor and Orzán, located in the center of the city, are perfect urban beaches to stroll by the sea or just sit and enjoy its murmur. If the weather permits, a refreshing swim is a great option.

For those who prefer a green environment, the Méndez Núñez Gardens are an ideal alternative. This space, with sculptures, fountains and lush vegetation, is one of the green lungs of the city.

A place full of culture and science

A Coruña is a city with a wide cultural offer. If you are traveling with your family, we suggest you visit the Casa de las Ciencias, an interactive museum with a planetarium that fascinates both children and adults. Another option is the Domus, the first interactive museum in the world dedicated to the human being that houses exhibitions, interactive games and even a cinema.

Also not to be missed is the Aquarium Finisterrare, also known as the ‘house of fish’. This center is dedicated to the study of the ocean and to educating in sustainable attitudes towards the sea and the beings that inhabit it. It has a biological collection with more than three hundred different species, such as fish and seals.

If you prefer art, the Museum of Fine Arts of A Coruña has a collection ranging from the Renaissance to contemporary works, such as pieces by Goya and Sorolla. This place is a must-see if you are a lover of painting and sculpture.

And if you like beer, we recommend the MEGA, Mundo Estrella Galicia, a museum inside the Estrella Galicia factory itself where you will learn about the Spanish beer culture, learn about the brewing process and you can even pour a beer on your own, with tasting included.

To end the day, you can go up to the Mirador de San Pedro and enjoy one of the best sunsets in Galicia. This place, located on the hill west of the city, offers spectacular panoramic views. You have the option to get there walking, by car or in the elevator, which goes up directly from the promenade to the top.

Watching the sunset from there is an unforgettable experience. At this location is the Mirador de San Pedro Restaurant, where you can dine overlooking the ocean. A perfect time to rest after your long day and relax.
